Life & Legacy

John Robert Gregg (17 June 1867 – 23 February 1948) was an Irish-born American educator, publisher, and inventor, best known as the creator of the eponymous shorthand writing system, Gregg shorthand. Developed in the late 19th century and refined over several decades, Gregg shorthand became one of the most widely used systems of shorthand in the English-speaking world, particularly in business and educational settings during the 20th century.
Born in Ireland, Gregg emigrated to the United States, where he spent most of his professional life teaching, writing, and promoting methods of efficient written communication. He founded the Gregg Publishing Company, which became a major publisher of shorthand manuals, business texts, and vocational education materials. His work played a significant role in shaping commercial education and office practices in the United States and beyond.
